Texas Auto Insurance Minimums: What Lubbock Drivers Need to Know

Texas law requires every driver to carry liability insurance, but the state minimum is a floor, not a recommendation. Here is what the minimum covers, where it falls short, and what most Lubbock drivers should consider instead.

What is the Texas minimum?

Texas requires what is called 30/60/25 liability coverage:

  • $30,000 for injuries to one person

  • $60,000 for injuries per accident

  • $25,000 for damage to other people's property

Liability pays for the other driver's car, their medical bills and your legal defense if you are sued. It does not pay for your own car or your own injuries.

Why the minimum often is not enough

A new pickup can cost far more than $25,000 to replace, and a multi-vehicle accident can quickly pass $60,000 in medical bills. Anything above your limits can come out of your pocket, and the other driver can sue you for the difference. Many drivers choose higher limits for that reason.

Coverages Texas policies include unless you reject them

  • Personal injury protection (PIP): pays medical bills and lost wages for you and your passengers, no matter who caused the accident. It is included unless you reject it in writing.

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM): pays if you are hit by a driver with no insurance, not enough insurance, or in a hit-and-run. Insurers must offer it, and you must reject it in writing.

Protecting your own vehicle

  • Collision pays to repair or replace your car after an accident.

  • Comprehensive pays for theft, fire, flood, vandalism and other damage that is not a collision. In West Texas that includes hail, which makes comprehensive especially important here.

If you have a car loan, your lender will usually require both.

How to save without cutting the wrong corners

  • Bundle your auto and home policies

  • Ask about safety-feature, defensive driving, multi-car and claims-free discounts

  • When comparing quotes, look at limits and deductibles, not just price

  • Shop early if you get a non-renewal notice so you never have a gap in coverage
